Vertical Reference Train the Trainer

The train-the-trainer (THT) program ties into the long line vertical reference-slinging course. The trainee will be provided with a 32-page training pilot note package.  You will be walked through each exercise from briefing to debriefing.  The THT training pilot notes progress through Introduction, Motivation, Objective, Elements of the maneuver, Evaluation and Critique.
The notes can be used as a guideline or upgraded to suit the individual instructor or organization.  In the cockpit the trainee will switch roles with the AHT training pilot and experience each exercise from the training/safety pilots perspective.

Vertical Reference Long-Line DVOC Training

This course utilizes a building block training system combining ground-school and flight exercises.  After an initial ground school module and flight preparation an individual pilot interview and evaluation flight is conducted and from this the course is tailored to the students learning style. Ground school is conducted using fully narrated PowerPoint, animated 3D video and DVD presentations with question and answer periods.

Ground school and flights are staged to prepare the student for each flight exercise and followed by debriefing.  Virtually all questions the student might have will be answered in the following ground school course module.  Group discussion introduces the pilot trainee to VR Long-Line concepts and terminology. These discussions stimulate the development of a company VR long-line culture.

Ground- School Time

A half-day is initially dedicated to ground training with the first flight exercises in the afternoon.  An additional 6 hours of ground school is provided in morning session's during the following days.  .

Helicopter Flight Training Time

Flight exercise time depends on the individual trainees external cargo background and industry experience. Using the AHT method of fully preparing the pilot/trainee for each exercise, we frequently find pilots who have never slung before demonstrating impressive levels of load and hook control by 3 hours and others who have some short line slinging experience take less time. This all depends on the individual’s determination to focus on course material and ability to draw on and connect with known skills.

This course trains a pilot not only how to Long-line but also how to function safely and effectively in the Vertical Reference Long-line business. We also cover how to survive the hazards and pitfalls of this competitive but rewarding work environment. An emphasis is put on safety, proper equipment selection, rigging, inspection of aircraft and sling gear, coordination of ground crew, customer relations and taking command of the working environment.

Teaching you at your base, in your country on the helicopter you will utilize day-to-day will save you time and money.

Wildfire Water Bucket Training

This course is made up of 3 hours of ground school and is supported by PowerPoint and DVD presentations. • Water-bucket set up and testing
  • Bucket care maintenance (pilots and mechanics)
  • Safety on the job
  • Inspection of rigging
  • Belly hook bucketing (bucket control head connected to belly hook. no lanyard or long line)
  • Operation of sundry components (depending on bucket manufacturer)

*Note: For Vertical Reference Long-Line Course graduates,  2 x 1 hour practice exercises will provide a solid introduction to long-line water bucketing. The training time varies depending on pilot's past work experience.

Consultation and contact information for the purchase of equipment specific to the fire behavior and terrain in your country can be provided.

Wildfire Belly Tank Training

Ground Crew Safety and Support Training

This course includes 2 hours of classroom sessions and 1 hour for briefings and debriefings with practical exercises in the local training area. This can be in conjunction with a pilot sling training program.

This course is presented using PowerPoint and DVD presentations and covers:

  • Safety equipment
  • Radio communications
  • Hand signals
  • Staging area, service landing setup, safety and administration
  • Dust abatement

External Cargo lifting Site supervisor Training

This course will teach future site supervisors how to select and establish a suitable staging area/service landing.  You will learn to establish a chain of command, delegate duties, select safe approach and departure corridors, position support equipment such as fuel bowser,  set up a (ERP) Emergency Response Plan, establish safe marshaling zones,  manage onlookers and the public.

This course is 2 hours of ground classroom training and simulated site setup.

The ground crew training course is presented as a part of this program.

External Cargo Rigging Training and Equipment Acquisition

Advanced Helicopter Training will provide your pilots, mechanics and ground crew with the methods and reference material to rig cargo loads safely and efficiently.

After an initial course in proper personal safety equipment, hand signals and radio protocol the trainees will cover:

  • Inspection of wire rope, synthetic (spectra) rope.
  • Eyes, thimbles.
  • Connecting devises such as shackles (omegas).
  • Straps, slings and cargo nets.
  • Types of hooks and swivels and when to use them.
  • The securing of connecting devices.

This course will provide the trainee the knowledge to cross reference symbols and charts to determine the required size and carrying capacity of rigging for specific jobs as well as how to inspect determine the condition of and retire equipment if necessary.

Consultation and contact information for the purchase of slings long-lines, remote hooks, connecting devices, nets and all other related lifting equipment can also be provided.

Class D Rigging Training and Equipment Acquisition

Advanced Helicopter Training (AHT) has on-going relationships with Class D training providers in Canada and the USA who will handle all your Class D equipment and crew training needs.  AHT will provide your crew with their initial DVOC vertical reference long line training including a Class D Short Haul, HET's
(Human External Cargo) introduction course.  We will then arrange for one of these specialty providers to conduct your Cass D Short Haul / HET's ground and flight training for your pilots, ground crew and search and rescue technicians.

The Short Haul / HET's
(Human External Cargo) equipment standards, rules and regulations change frequently as this function becomes more widely utilized and regulated.  I feel it is best to connect my clients with training organizations that focus on Class D and who stay abreast of the policy and rule changes on a daily basis.  This way you (the client) receive the most up to date information and training.

Congested Area Planning Instruction and Implementation

AHT has a very informative Congested Area Plan (CAP) seminar that gets right to the meat of the concerns surrounding the preparation and execution of a CAP.   This presentation can be provided as an add-on to any other AHT course.
